If writing a children’s book, it can be quite difficult to know your audience in the present children’s book market. Logically thinking, it’s actually the adults who buy the books, not the children. But you want the child to be engaged in your story, and for them to want to hear more. In order to create a nice balance the book should be appealing for adults too. It should be friendly to both audiences.

So, when writing a children’s book, it needs

  1. To catch the eye of the adult, so they feel it could be a good read for their child, and so they therefore will buy the book.
  2. To Capture the child’s interests and keep them captivated. This can also happen if the adult themselves are excited about the book. It creates extra intrigue for the child.

All this will basically create a comfortable and exciting reading experience, especially if the adult is reading to the child. If you think about it, moments like these would not be achievable without YOU. Reading to a child at bedtime gives the opportunity for bonding time. This is something that will stay with both adult and child always. My nieces still remember me and my own mum reading them stories when they were toddling around in nappies.

So when writing a children’s book, think about the parents too!
